With its matching proportions and its liquid inserts, the Taj Mahal is classified as an excellent example of Mughal architecture, a combination of Indian, Persian, and Muslim styles. Other attractions include twin mosque buildings (parallel to the opposite side of the mausoleum), beautiful gardens and a museum. One of the most beautiful songs in the world, the Taj Mahal is also one of the world's largest monuments, visited by millions of tourists every year. The building was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Design and construction of the Taj Mahal -Shah Jahan

Named after the Taj Mahal in honor of the Mumtaz Mahal, the mausoleum is made of white marble inscribed with precious stones (including jade, crystal, lapis lazuli, amethyst and turquoise) that make intricate designs known as pietra dura.

Its central dome reaches a height of 240 meters (73 meters) and is surrounded by four small houses; four slender towers, or minarets, stood on the corners. According to Islamic tradition, verses from the Quran are inscribed on arched doors to the tombs, in addition to many other aspects of the problem.

Inside the mausoleum, an octagonal marble room adorned with carved statues and small stones placed in the cenotaph, or false tomb, of Mumtaz Mahal. The actual sarcophagus containing its own fossils lay below, at the garden level.

All other buildings of the Taj Mahal include a main red stone gate and a square garden separated by houses by tall pools of water, as well as a red Islamic church and a similar structure called a jawab (or "mirror") directly across the Islamic church. The traditional Mughal construction practice would not allow for any changes to be made to the building.

As the story progresses, Shah Jahan intended to build a second large mausoleum across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal, where his remains would be buried when he died; both buildings had to be connected by a bridge.

In fact, Aurangzeb (the third son of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal) removed his ailing father in 1658 and took over. Shah Jahan lived the last years of his life confined to a house in the tower of Red Fort in Agra, for the purpose of a beautiful resting place he built for his wife; when he died in 1666, he was buried beside him.
